Chapter 14

“Dove, you need to see this,” my mom called out from her office.

I could tell from the tone in her voice something wasn’t right. I stepped away from the longarm machine and into her office.

I frowned. “What’s up?”

She was sitting at her desk looking at her Facebook page on the computer. Agnes was standing behind her looking over her shoulder. “We are getting messages.”

I smiled. “Oh, that’s good. Are they asking about quilting services?”

“No. They are asking is it true that a murder took place here.” Mom grimaced at me. “I’m not sure what to say.”

“Oh, my gosh.” I cupped my face in my hands, horrified that my marketing skills were backfiring. “I didn’t even think people would find out about that.”

“Look at that. This woman is claiming to be a medium. She says she can come into the shop and commune with the dead. She is saying she can find out who the murderer is.”

Mom pointed at the screen. “She says she’ll only charge eight hundred dollars.”

Agnes huffed. “That’s a scam. I met a woman in New Orleans that read my palm one time. She only charged twenty bucks. Plus she was wrong about everything. Told me I was going to marry my enemy.” Agnes let out a laugh. “I’m never marrying again even if someone paid me a million dollars.”

Mom looked up at me with worry in her eyes. “What am I going to do? Should I respond?”

I shook my head. “No. I’ll respond. Just ignore the ones wanting to know about the murder for now.”

For the rest of the morning, I combed through the messages. I skipped over the ones wanting details about the murder. When I came upon legitimate questions about prices, I quoted amounts for quilting options. By the time I’d finished, I had three confirmed customers. Perhaps a win after all.

My stomach growled and I glanced at the time. It was past noon. I’d missed lunch.

I walked out of the office and spotted Mom and Patricia with their heads together talking about something. When I walked over, they both looked up.

“Is everything okay?”

Mom gave me a nervous look. “Patricia’s received a threatening letter.”

“Patricia?” I looked at her, clearly worried. “What did it say?”

She swallowed and looked at me with big eyes behind her cat glasses. “You can read it.” She held out the letter with the envelope.

I took the papers from her trembling hand and carefully read the letter.

Better leave the quilt shop before something happens to you, too.

I turned over the envelope to investigate where the post office stamp originated. Alarmed by what I saw, I looked at her. “It was mailed from Harland Creek.”

“Patricia, if you want to take some vacation time until this is sorted out, I will understand.”

“I can’t do that, Mildred. I need my paycheck.” She turned her worried eyes on my mom.

“Well, maybe I can pay you for your time off.” Mom bit her lip.

“Mom, can you afford to do that?” I looked at her.

“A week at the most.
